MAX L. HART (As furnished by the Public Relations Dept)

Director of Fund Raising

Disabled American Veterans

Tagged by NonProfit Times as “the dean of nonprofit direct mail,” Max Hart has headed the Direct Mail Fund Raising Program of the million-member Disabled American Veterans (DAV) since 1969, from DAV National Headquarters in Greater Cincinnati.

During more than three decades with the DAV, Mr. Hart has been involved in raising more than $1.4 billion in charitable contributions through the mail in support of essential services to disabled veterans and their families. One of the largest mailers in the nation, the DAV generated more than 80% of its revenues through direct mail fund raising last year.

The respect Mr. Hart enjoys in his profession was first demonstrated in his 1990 election to the Board of Directors of the industry's largest trade group, the Direct Marketing Association (DMA). He has also served on the Board’s Executive Committee. Over the years, additional DMA activities have included Board Liaison to the Committee on Ethical Business Practices, Annual Conference Program Advisory Committee, Privacy Task Force, chaired the DMA Non-Profit Special Interest Council, DMA Governmental Affairs Committee, and DMA’s Political Action Committee Board. He is also a past member of the Board of Directors of PostCom and the University of Cincinnati Direct Marketing Policy Center Advisory Board. He has participated in several Direct Marketing Industry Leaders Conferences, and is a founding officer of the Cincinnati Direct Marketing Club.

Highlighting his professional career, Mr. Hart was inducted into the DMA Hall of Fame in 2000. The DMA Hall of Fame, whose recipients include notables such as Aaron Montgomery Ward, Eddie Bauer and Leon L. (L.L.) Bean, is the highest professional honor in direct marketing.

Mr. Hart is extensively published in professional literature and frequently speaks at conferences, seminars and educational symposia offered by associations serving direct marketers and fundraisers. In 1989 he received two significant honors: first as DMA List Leader of the Year and then as Target Marketing Magazine’s Fund Raiser of the Year. In 1997, he was presented the DMA Professional Fundraising Achievement Award. He is also a contributing editor for Response, a monthly fund raising newsletter. Is it any wonder that NonProfit Times cited this fund raising pioneer as one of the “Power and Influence Top 50” in the field of nonprofit management in America.

Following service in the U. S. Army, Mr. Hart completed a business degree at Ohio State University in 1958 and began his marketing career at Proctor and Gamble. Prior to joining the DAV’s executive team, he worked with R. L. Polk & Company for nine years, holding various administrative and management positions in Detroit, Phoenix, Seattle and Cincinnati.

NANCY (GILMORE) BOWERS

We are new computer owners as of December 2000. I have enjoyed the Harding High School web site and especially the biographies to which I decided to add one more. After graduating from high school in 1951 I entered nursing school in Toledo, Ohio. At this same time I met Ken who was best man for my sister's wedding. In August of 1953 we married. I always say, "I got the best man."

Following my graduation from nursing school I worked as a surgical nurse.

From 1967 until 1972 I taught and trained surgical technicians. I then

resumed my education and became a CRNA (certified registered nurse

anesthetist) and continued on to earn a bachelor of science degree and a

master's degree in education. I took a position as director of the School of

Anesthesia at St. Vincent Hospital and Medical Center in Toledo. I served in

this position for ten years until the closure of the school (1974-1984).At

this time I returned to the "hands on" practice of anesthesia at The Toledo

Hospital until my retirement in 1995. Ken had previously retired from the

University of Toledo in 1992.

From 1953 until our retirement our home was in Swanton, a small town twenty

miles west of Toledo. In 1981 we bought a home on Lake Columbia near

Brooklyn,Michigan anticipating retirement.

Following Ken's retirement we sold our home in Swanton and made our home at

Lake Columbia our primary residence.

Upon my retirement we bought a house in Mesa, Arizona. We presently spend

our winters in Mesa and return to Lake Columbia in May. We feel very

fortunate to have the "best of two worlds"

We have two children. Both reside in Toledo We have one grandchild whom we

love dearly. Our son is a dentist and our daughter is a commercial

photographer. Since retirement we are busy with church activities, bridge,

boating, following Ohio State and University of Toledo sporting activities

and of course following all of our grandson's activities. We often wonder

how we had time to work! Hope to hear from many more classmates in the near

future. This renewing of old friendships will make our reunion so much more

fun.

After graduation I worked at the local Moore's Store until Uncle Sam called.  Before being shipped to Yokohama, Japan, Margery Endicott, St. Mary's class of '48 and I were married. I finally received my most welcome separation notice, and Marg and I set up housekeeping in Marion.  Still with Moore's, I became manager of the Ashland store, and later the Tiffin store.  Then I ran a wholesale potato chip route in Tiffin for Dan Dee Potato Chips for seventeen years.

Marg and I had six children, four boys and two girls.  Mark, who lives in Columbus and works for the Ohio department of taxation; Tracey D'Alessandro, who lives in Columbus and works for the federal government; David, who is an Optometrist living in Westerville; Rick, who now has eighteen years in the Air Force and lives in Fayetteville, N.C.; John, who is the pastry chef at the Metropolitan Club in D.C. and lives in Fairfax, Va.; and Erin Hassel, who is an apparent cancer survivor and lives in Olmsted Falls and teaches third grade in North Royalton.

Margery died in January of 1976, and life became more of a challenge.  I had a second marriage and after awhile that didn't work too well, so life became more of a challenge.

Along the way I did a little archery, bowling, golf, and found another job.  I finally retired from American Standard in Tiffin Ohio after seventeen years.

I also met, fell in love and married Janice Zeigler Baker, Fostoria HS class of '51. Life has become much more enjoyable and practically no challenge.  We hope both classes have their fiftieth close together.

Janice and I moved to  5601 Duncan Rd. #151, Punta Gorda, Florida two years ago and we do mark the calendar the days we stay home.  We live in a manufactured home park, and we have a full compliment of activities to keep us busy.

Our E-mail address is hjapple@peganet.com

Suzanne (Terzo) Ailing

Good Morning Everyone, It is a beautiful day in Huron, Ohio, my granddaughter is 4

months old today and I feel grrrrrreat You want a bio, I’m stuck doing laundry, so here goes. After graduating from good old Harding High, I attended Miami University for two years, got sick, came home, worked at The Marion Star, met Karl at the Ritz Bar and Grill and married him in 1955. We have four children, Holly an RN, Marianne, a singer and a stay at home mom who has presented us with three grandchildren, David 10, Jonah 3, and Molly who happens to be the most beautiful baby alive!, Steve who is a choir and band director at Elyria High School, and last, but not least, Scott who has a great tenor voice, lives in NYC, and would like to sing opera someday. He is not rich, however he makes a decent living singing now.

While we were busy being parents we did find some time to join Harlequins Community Theater where I was fortunate to be cast in several plays. Among them Opal in "Everybody Loves Opal", Lola in Come Back Little Sheba , Karl directed that one an Claree in Steel Magnolias. Also did many children’s plays, and every backstage job. It was fun for lots of years, but then six weeks for rehearsals and three or more weekends of performances got to be a bit much.

I had cancer four years ago, I’m fine now, but you never know when or where that nasty little tumor may show up again.

I almost forgot----Karl and I bought Sandusky Hearing Aid Center, I worked for Headstsrt, went back to college at BG and got a degree in Elementary Education.

Now I’m busy with our family, love to knit and do needlepoint. If any of you gals knit and have a pattern for an argyle sweater, let me know. Can" t seem to find one around here.

Hope to hear from all of you in the near future. This is such a great idea. We should try to get together sometime. I’d love to see all of you.

Sue (Kochensperger) Gay

Bruce has me hooked for interest in our classmates of 1951. In order not to bore all of you to tears, I will make this short and sweet-after high school I was a college drop out before the word became so popular so that takes care of 1952-1953. I n 1953 I moved with relatives to Arlington Hts, Ill. and went to work for Northern Illnois Gas Co. for the next two years, living in Des Plaines, and Skokie always moving closer to my job which was in Evanston. Living the single life and enjoying Chicago very much. Then-blame it on Jane Leffler Winters who was getting married June 26, 1956--I came home to be a bridesmaid in her wedding and met Sandy Gay uptown one day and as we all say the rest is history. Anyway he asked me out and I shoulda known first he had to play softball before we went out, on the only night we could get together. Married Sandy in 1956, kid in 1956--we got married in Jan. and she was born in Dec., moved to St Joseph, Michigan in late 1959 with Whirlpool, transferred back in 1978, lived in Claridon ever since. Second child born August 1960 in St Joe. 5 grandkids. Sandy had open heart surgery in 1989, downhill ever since. He retired 1990 when they were about to transfer us to Dayton and we said to heck with it. Sandy died in Dec1998 on our older childs 42nd birthday. So I am trying to pick up the pieces-if it weren’t for the dogs I’d go stark raving crazy - or crazier than I already am.. The first real enthusiam I’ve felt in a long long spell is coming to the Beast’s house and playing on the computer. Sandy wanted me to get a computer for years so I could write a book but I am pretty stubborn. Anyway write to me at Beast’s address. Sue Kochensperger Gay-In the early years when he’d get mad at me he’d say I only married him to shorten my name-like the rest of you we had years of heaven and hell and I wish we could have some more..Please write. Sue

51’ - 53’ Attended Ohio State

Nov. 53’ Entered the Army and went to Ft. Knox, Ky. for basic training.

Feb. 54’ Went to Ft. Belvoir, Va. for Engineering School.

May 54’ Went to Ft. Dix, N.J. on orders to ship out for France.

June 3, 54’ Arrived Bremerhaven, Germany.

June 8, 54’ Arrived at Toul Engineering Depot - Toul, France.

Assigned the responsibility for the Depot Vital Records. Believe it or not, this was my first "hands on" experience with a Computer. We had an IBM 305 RAMAC that we used to record all the Depot records on for storage and retrieval. This thing took up most of a 12’ X 12’ room and stored the data on 24" diameter disks that weighed about 6 pounds each. Storage capacity of those disks? About 25% of our little "floppies". Computers have indeed, "come a long way"!

Progressed through the ranks with final promotion to Sgt. in Sept. 55’.

Spent Leaves traveling around England, Ireland, Denmark, Germany, Italy and France.

Nov. 1, 55’ Departed France for the States.

Nov.15, 55’ Arrived Ft. Sheriden, IL for processing.

Nov. 17, 55’ The U. S. Army severed our relationship and I headed for Marion.

Nov. 30, 55’ Started work at Whirlpool in Engineering as a Records Clerk.

June 30, 56’ Married Dee Harris from Marion.

As has been said before, ENOUGH FOR NOW!

Donald Welch

After graduation in May of '51, I went to work full time at Marion Power Shovel Co.

In Sept. '52, I enlisted in the Air Force, and after basic training, was stationed at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, then at Gary Air Force Base in San Marcos, Texas. While I was at Gary, I was in helicopter maintenance and air rescue, and was TDY to Korea, French Indo-China, and other overseas locations. I met my wife in 1955 in San Marcos, and we were married in January 1956. When I was discharged in October 1956, we moved back to Marion where I went back to work at the Marion Power Shovel. Our oldest daughter, Donna, was born in Marion on the coldest day of the year (it was 20 below that January morning!) We left Marion in June of 1957, and returned to Jean's home state -- Texas -- where I worked with her father on the farm/ranch. Three more daughters were born after we moved to Texas. Kathy, Laura, and Elizabeth. All but Elizabeth live in the Austin area.

Elizabeth lives in Dover, DE. We have eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way. In 1958, I started college on the GI bill, and received my BS degree in Industrial Arts in 1961. I taught high school for 33 years and retired. I attended graduate school at University of Texas and Texas A&M. When I retired from teaching, I went to work full time as a Crime Prevention Officer with a local police department. I had been doing this work as a volunteer for about 15 years before I retired. During my law enforcement years, I worked security for several movies being filmed here in the Austin

area, providing personal protection for several of the stars. I still

volunteer part-time in crime prevention since retiring for the second time from full-time police work.

Jean worked 30 years for the IRS at the Austin Service Center, and retired in 1996. Now that we are both retired, we devote most of our time to our antique business. We concentrate on antique glassware.

We will be in Ohio in June for the Heisey Glass convention and auction. We plan to spend a few days in Marion after the convention, looking for more bargains in glass. Hope we can get some of the gang together while we're there.

That's about it, folks!

 Miriam (Kinney) Root

Here's what's been happening to me.  Went to Ohio State to become an

Occupational Therapist (O.T.) Millie Williams and I went for a year to

Cleveland where I worked at the Rehab Center; hated it and went back to

Columbus to work at Children's Hospital and loved it.  Also did homebound OT for the Multiple Sclerosis Society; then started an O.T. department at Mt. Carmel Hospital in Columbus.  Had married in 1958 to Steve Root who got a job in Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) beginning of 1962.  Our first daughter, Lisa was born the end of 1962, son Michael, in 1964 and daughter, Amy in 1966.  When they were grown and I wanted to return to work, O.T. had changed so much that it was like a whole new field, so I became a computer drafter at LLNL and later did AutoCADD at home.  Steve left in 1993 and remarried.  I enjoy grandchildren, (grandson lived with me for a year and a half), co-lead a Bible study, do a lot of line dancing, love sightseeing and traveling (just returned from a whirlwind trip of western Europe - we

would be there when the bombing started!)  Also like crafts of all kinds - tried ceramics, needle crafts, candle making, and you name it.  I guess that brings me up to date.

Julie Parsell Baechle

I graduated from Harding with secretarial skills. I took a secretarial

position at Tecumseh and worked there until I had saved enough for college. At Ohio State I met John Robert (Bob) Baechle, a young electrical engineer from Lancaster OH, who had just entered graduate school. At the end of my freshman year at OSU, Bob and I were married and later I left school to start our family. In 1964 Bob graduated with his Ph D and took a job with Bell Telephone Laboratories. We moved to New Jersey with our five little children and have lived here ever since. (Exit 116 on the Garden State Parkway) When all the children were launched in school, I resumed my education, earning a

degree in Computer Technology and, finally, an accounting degree from

Rutgers. I took a position as a tax auditor with the State of NJ, where I worked until I turned 62 and retired. Our five children all married New Jersey people and we have eight grandchildren. Our son moved back to Ohio and lives near Lancaster in the community where his father grew up. We are very proud of them all. Bob's current hobby is sail boating and he belongs to US Power Squadrons. This year I have become interested in genealogy. I am fascinated with the wealth of historical and genealogical information that is appearing on the Internet.

Marion County is particularly rich in this regard. Both Bob and I spend a lot of time on our computers, engaging in a variety of activities. We both read a lot and we travel when we can.
